GENERATE: The First-Generation College Student Program is designed to support the success of first-generation college students at San Jose State University. Through a series of workshops, events, and resource materials, GENERATE seeks to foster connection, skill building, and academic success for those who identify as first-generation college students.
As of Fall 2014, the GENERATE Program was adopted by the MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center. Come visit GENERATE in the Student Union East Wing to find out more information about our center, services, and ways you can get involved!
GENERATE: First-Generation College Students Program has now finished its programming. Thank you to all who were involved in this pilot program.
Who are First-Generation College Students?
The term First-Generation College Student is defined in different ways.
As identified in a recent article from the California State University's Chancellor's Office, about half of CSU undergraduate students will be the first in their families to receive a four-year degree. These statistics are consistent with those of incoming students at San José State, the first university established in the CSU system.
Achievement gaps persist between those who have parents with a four-year college degree and those who do not nationwide. Therefore, for the purpose of the GENERATE project, we define first-generation college students as the first in the family to pursue a four-year college degree.
